About the NSS Operating Committees


Awards Committee        

Responsible for the recognition programs of the Society, and for enhancing the value that the Society delivers to chapters and membership.  The Committee reports to the Vice President for Public Affairs.


Chapters Committee        

Responsible for the growth, relationships and servicing of NSS local Chapters.  The Committee includes the Chapter Coordinators and Chapters' Assembly Chair, and reports to the Vice President for Chapters.  For more information, please see the Chapters Committee Web site.


Conferences Committee        

Responsible for coordinating the planning and execution of the Society's annual International Space Development Conference (ISDC) and any other conferences as directed by the Senior Operating Officer (SOO), to whom the Committee reports.


Development Committee        

Responsible for the raising of funds for the Society, including institutional giving, individual giving, bequests, major events, private foundation grants and high value donor programs.  The Committee reports to the Vice President for Development.


Education and Outreach Committee        

Responsible for planning and execution of outreach to and education for the general public, maintaining a Speakers Bureau, and for enhancing the value that the Society delivers to the general public.  The Committee reports to the Senior Operating Officer.


Internet Services Committee (ISC)        

Responsible for the development, maintenance, and security of NSS Web sites (excluding chapter-managed sites) and associated Internet services (online forms and databases, email forwarding, email lists, domain and server licenses, etc.), and for implementing the requirements of the Web Oversight Committee (WOC).  The ISC also assists NSS chapters with the development and maintenance of chapter-managed Web sites, to the maximum extent practical.  The ISC also assists the WOC in the development of any standards (e.g., logos, colors, common headers and footers, etc.) to be followed.

The ISC includes persons possessing or desiring Web site development, Web page design, email administration, and/or other Internet-related skills.  ISC members work individually or in small groups with counterparts from the WOC, who provide the requirements and guidelines for needed Web site changes, as well as approval oversight.  The ISC Chair coordinates this activity so that the requirements of the WOC are met in an accurate and timely manner.  The ISC Chair also helps members to receive training, resources (e.g., server software), and access to servers.  The ISC reports to the Senior Operating Officer, coordinates with the WOC, and works as necessary with NSS HQ staff, NSS chapters, and contract services.


Membership Committee        

Responsible for the growth and servicing of the membership, and for enhancing the value that the Society delivers to the membership.  The Committee reports to the Vice President for Membership.


Policy Committee        

Responsible for determining the general positions of the Society on legislative issues and the strategy and program through which the Society shall promote these positions, as well as overseeing the implementation of those policies via the Political Action Network (PAN).  The Committee reports to the Executive Vice-President.  For more information, please see the Policy Committee Web site.

Per the NSS bylaws, membership on the Policy Committee is tightly controlled by the Executive Committee.  For this reason, it is recommended that new volunteers first join the Political Action Network (PAN).


Political Action Network        

This comprises the implementation arm of the Policy Committee.  It is responsible for carrying out the positions of the Society via legislative and grassroots action, such as the annual Legislative Blitz).  The PAN reports to the Chair of the Policy Committee.  For more information, please see the Legislative and Political Action Network Center Web site.


Projects Committee        

Responsible for the development and management of major projects (e.g., scientific, educational) of the Society.  The Committee also provides assistance (when requested) for chapter-managed projects.  The Committee reports to the Senior Operating Officer.


Public Affairs Committee        

Responsible for the positioning of the Society relative to the media, for the timely writing and dissemination of press releases and other media-focused documents, and for enhancing the value that the Society delivers to the media.  The Public Affairs Committee reports to the Vice President for Public Affairs and works closely with the Executive Director in order to coordinate media contacts.


Publications Committee        

Responsible for enhancing the quality of NSS publications, including Ad Astra magazine.  The Publications Committee reports to the Vice President for Public Affairs and coordinates with the Executive Director and Ad Astra Editor.


Web Oversight Committee (WOC)        

Responsible for ensuring that NSS messages, information, and services are accurately portrayed and effectively utilized via NSS Web sites, including chapter-managed sites (to the maximum extent practical).  The WOC is thus responsible for the observed structure (hierarchy) and content (text and graphic messages) in NSS Web sites (excluding chapter-managed sites) and associated Internet services (online forms, email forwarding, email lists, etc.).  The WOC is also responsible for approving any standards (e.g., logos, colors, common headers and footers, etc.) to be followed, and for encouraging their use by chapters (to the maximum extent practical).

The WOC includes representatives from those participating NSS committees that require or desire Web site services.  WOC members work individually or in small groups with counterparts from the Internet Services Committee (ISC) or other service providers, for whom they provide the requirements and guidelines for needed Web site changes, as well as approval oversight.  The WOC Chair coordinates this activity and help members to receive the support needed from the ISC and other service providers.  The WOC Chair also helps members to be educated on agreed-upon Web site standards.  The WOC reports to the Vice President for Public Affairs, coordinates with the ISC, and works as necessary with NSS HQ staff, NSS chapters, and contract services.
