WEEK 2

Forming Groups for NASA Space Settlement Design Contest

OBJECTIVE: To learn to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, form project teams

CONTENT AREAS: scientific inquiry; science in personal and social perspectives; science as a human endeavor; science and technology in local, national, and global challenges.

You will now form groups. Groups can be formed from 1-5 students, each group should have a scientist, artist, project leader, researcher, and taskmaster. Students could take multiple roles in smaller groups.

• PROJECT LEADER: Communicates with the teacher, assigns tasks, distributes resources, meets deadlines.
• SCIENTIST: Checks report for scientific accuracy, provides scientific information and basis for the report; quantifies the design ideas
• ARTIST: Illustrates the ideas of the group using traditional art materials or computer graphics.
• RESEARCHER: Guides the research process; collects and prints information from Internet Sites, books; writes the bibliography for the written report; works closely with the scientist in the group.
• TASKMASTER: Gathers all the necessary resources and materials, types the report; works closely with the project leader.

• Project leader assigns tasks, conducts a group meeting to discuss tasks that need to be done.

• Explore the Contest Page
• Decide what you need to know and do for the successful completion of the project. You should discuss in your group What are Orbital Space Settlements, How can they be built, Who will live there, Where they can be put in orbit and where will you get the resources to build it.
• Use Planning Form to plan your weekly activities.
• Begin to fill in the entry form.
• Study the design alternatives.
• Take the Quiz for Week 2
