Humidity levels are controlled within manned spacecraft using condensing heat exchangers. This was also the case in early plans for the Space Station Freedom potable water processor. The heat exchanger is used for the function of both Thermal and Humidity Control. Liquid phase water is produced which is slightly contaminated with water soluble trace organics, including organic acids, glycols and alcohols, that are also present in the enclosed atmosphere. Humidity condensate is relatively pure in comparison to other wastewater streams aboard spacecraft such as urine distillate or hygiene waters. For this reason, it is also relatively simple to reclaim to potable standards. All drinking water aboard the Mir Space Station either originates from reclaimed humidity condensate, or resupply from the ground.
