FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NSS Statement on Passing of NASA Astronaut Wally Schirra Walter 'Wally' Schirra, one of America's greatest space heroes, died on Thursday at the age of 84. He was the only astronaut to fly in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, and the third American astronaut to reach space. NSS salutes this great explorer, and remembers his vibrant sense of humor. NSS members send their condolences to the Schirra family.
