Philip Young

Philip Young is a member of the Board of Directors for the National Space Society (NSS).

Philip has a long history with NSS having joined the National Space Institute in 1980. He is currently President of the National Space Society of Australia (NSSA), the largest group of NSS chapters outside the US, a position he has held since 1998. He joined the NSS Board of Directors in 2000, has been a Director of NSSA since 1996, and served as President of the Sydney Space Frontier Society chapter from 1996 to 1997.

NSSA’s flagship event is the biennial Australian Space Development Conference. Philip has been on the organizing committee since 1994 and is Deputy Chairman for 2002. Other positions include Chairman, Australian Space Summit 1998-2001 and member of the Executive Committee of the Australian Space Industry Chamber of Commerce.

One of the defining moments in his life was when, at the age of seven, he stood in his back yard hoping to see Sputnik 2 pass overhead and perhaps even hear Laika bark. Even though this effort met with disappointment, now that he is married with four children he wants to make certain that the sense of wonder, and the boundless opportunities of civilization beyond the Earth, are theirs for the taking.
